Cool Locals UK

This page is organised in sections in alphabetical order, by location – Channel Islands, England, Northern Ireland, Wales – and within each section, also by places, listed A-Z. From time to time we can’t work out which part of the UK someone is in. The first of those is the inspiring Unjaded Jade, who we blogged about here. Cool Local locations:

Channel Islands

We’ll get there….

The late Stephen Hawking at Domenic’s
  • Cambridgeshire – One day we popped into Domenic’s Gentlemans’ Hairdresser in Newnham Road in Cambridge and the owner was kind and helpful when we made an unusual request. Kind and helpful people are, by definition, cool. Photo from their Facebook page
  • Kent – Chiddingstone Castle, one of the numerous heritage places open to the public across the UK which are independent, and not with the National Trust or English Heritage. Much as we admire those organisations, the independent locations are important too
  • London, St Mary Cray – The Croft Tea Room, a community interest company, we blogged about it in 2012. The ownership has since changed, the dining is just as good
  • London, Orpington – Teepol Products – historic cleaning products manufacturer
  • Manchester – Manchester Village Spartans RUFC – “a Gay & Inclusive Rugby Club”. See also our blog on Urmston and Cool Locals there
  • Shropshire, Highley – The Netherton Foundry, cookware made in the birthplace of the industrial revolution. Here’s an insight from 2013

Northern Ireland – we met a Northern Irish company who helped in a DIY SOS build in Orpington in Kent – but under BBC rules we can’t name them! Well done Northern Ireland, even so

  • Dingwall – Animal Health Highland – really nice people, we’ll blog to say more one day
  • Dunbar – The Dunbar Community Bakery – we went and ate a lot of sausage rolls there in 2015, read more here
  • Edinburgh – Royal Yacht Britannia. Terrific visitor experience. Including the fudge made on the ship
  • Glasgow (nearby) – Paul Meisak, an inspiring terminal cancer patient who sadly passed away in 2018, and who was on BBC Radio 5Live sharing his positivity despite his condition – more here
  • North Berwick – Steampunk Coffee – cool and eclectic

Wales – our top Wales choice, the Welsh Charitables RFC, raising money for charity via the national sport. We attended one of their great charity fundraisers in 2013, quite a night.
